Geodetic network optimization for geophysical parameters

چکیده
The first order design problem in geodesy is generalized here, to seek the network configuration that optimizes the precision of geophysical parameters. An optimal network design that satisfies intuitively appropriate criteria corresponds to minimizing the sum of logarithmic variances of eigenparameters. This is equivalent to maximizing the determinant of the design matrix, allowing for closed-form analysis. An equivalent expression is also given specifically for square root information filtering, to facilitate numerical solution. Appropriate seeding of numerical solutions can be provided by exact analytical solutions to idealized models. For example, for an ideal transform fault, simultaneous resolution of both the locking depth D and location of the fault is optimized by placing stations at 3 D ± (~9 km) from the a priori fault plane. In a two-fault system, the resolution of slip partitioning is optimized by including a station midway between faults; however resolution is fundamentally limited for fault separation <2D (~30 km).

Extraction of the deterministic ingredient of a dynamic geodetic control network
A minimum constraints solution, which resolves the datum defect of a control network, is an arbitrary solution that may result in a systematic error in the estimation of the deformation parameters. This error is not derived frommeasurements and is usually inconsistent with the geophysical reality. A free network is affected only by errors of measurement and, therefore, a free network is an acce...

متن کاملBasic Concepts of Optimization and Design of Geodetic Networks
This contribution reviews a few basic concepts of optimization and design of a geodetic network. Proper assessment and analysis of networks is an important task in many geodetic-surveying projects. Appropriate quality-control measures should be defined, and an optimal design should be sought. The quality of a geodetic network is characterized by precision, reliability, and cost. The aim is to p...
متن کاملAssessment of GPS velocity accuracy for the Basin and Range Geodetic Network (BARGEN)
[1] We assess the accuracy of horizontal velocity estimates from the Basin and Range Geodetic Network (BARGEN), a continuous GPS network that has been in operation since 1996. To make this quantitative assessment, we use a procedure that we term the ‘‘whole-error’’ method. In this method, the measure of the velocity errors is the root-mean-square (RMS) residual velocity relative to a simple geo...
